Protective Coatings

St Barbara Mining engaged Goldfields Protective Coatings (GPC) to undertake the complete protective coating refurbishment of its gold processing Cyclone Tower. Scope of work included all structural steel columns, supports, braces, stairways, landings and handrails.

All structural steel surface areas were prepared by abrasive blast with inspection and subsequent mechanical repairs carried out. A customised protective coating system, designed and implemented by GPC, incorporated increased film build in wet areas to ensure substrate protection and increase time to next maintenance.

Project Highlights

  • The refurbishment of the Cyclone Tower was undertaken whilst the gold processing system was live, minimising impact on processing output.
  • GPC & SBM management and staff worked very closely together to ensure applicable risk management policies and procedures were reviewed, adopted and maintained. This extended to GPC staff attending SBM conducted seminars and demonstrations including confined space evacuation and the operation of medical emergency equipment.
  • A sophisticated scaffolding system (designed & installed by CPC Scaffolding) incorporating shade cloth for the control of waste dusts and overspray was utilised to ensure suitable access to all structural steel surface areas.
  • Scaffolding system with independent stairways allowed the safe and efficient removal & replacement of complete sections of Cyclone Tower grid mesh.

We relate the success of this and other projects to our business fundamentals of appropriate personnel training, on site supervision and open & honest communications with our clients.
